Clark ...

Reading, 10 x 8 inch oil on panel painting by George C. Clark AVAILABLE

Reading is one of four small pieces I will have for sale at the Palette & Chisel Academy of Fine Arts’ one day Spring Original Art Sale held next Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 11am to 4pm. The Academy is located at 1012 North Dearborn in Chicago. There will be hundreds of pieces of original art in many mediums to chose from, none priced higher than $300.

Reading is from a series of paintings I call the “White Room” paintings. I only work on this series with models I am employing on a regular basis at my home studio, which has white walls. I cover the floor with a white sheet and set up a 25 minute pose with my model nude or wearing a single garment (I’ve used a blue headscarf, a black vest, and a panne velvet bathrobe), and minimal props or furniture, in this case a book and a big throw pillow. I paint as fast as I can for 25 minutes, then we take a 5 minute break and we do a different pose or poses for the next 25 minutes. I might have my model do the “white room” pose again for 25 more minutes later in the session, but I never work than 50 minutes on one of these paintings on any given day. Then I will have her do the pose again the next time we work together, if necessary, but not for more than two 25 minute periods per day. These paintings are mostly small in scale. Some I finish in 2 or three 25 minute sittings, some have taken 5 or 6. Working this way is easier on my models, and it gives me the opportunity to do an underpainting the first day which will have dried by the next time I work on it so that I can make corrections by wiping away wet paint if I need to without destroying the previous session’s work.

Salome, 20 x 16 inch oil on canvas painting by George C.
Salome is my entry in the Palette & Chisel Academy’s annual GOLD MEDAL EXHIBITION, currently on view in the P&C Gallery at 1012 N. Dearborn Street in Chicago. There will be a reception Friday evening, January 18, 2012, from 5 to 8 pm. Everyone is welcome. The show will be up through February 5.

Model Dressed as Octavian in Act 1 of Der Rosenkavalier...

Model Dressed as Octavian in Act 1 of Der Rosenkavalier (detail), 50 x 38 inch oil on canvas by George C. Clark AVAILABLE

This painting will be in the exhibition “Portraits of the Palette” at the Palette & Chisel Academy of Fine Arts at 1012 North Dearborn Street in Chicago. The Show, which features the work of 30 P&C members, opens with an Artists’ Reception on Friday, December 9, 2011, and runs through January 1, 2012.

My painting is a portrait I did for a group exhibition I was in some years ago that featured images of people in the performing arts. My model was a very talented professional actress (in Jeff Award-winning plays) and a trained singer (although not of opera). I was inspired by a broadcast of Der Rosenkavalier from the Met. My model had the breeches and hose and the jabot (ruffled collar) and the red sash in her costume collection, and I bought her the puffy shirt at a resale shop.

The painting is life-size and shows the figure head to foot, but it is so big I couldn’t light the whole canvas for photography in my studio without getting bad reflective glare, so I present this detail.

Ecstatic Angels, Nikolaikirche Berlin, 10 x 13 inch ink drawing...

Ecstatic Angels, Nikolaikirche Berlin, 10 x 13 inch ink drawing by George C.
